ARIN IPv4 Chain Of Custody

Transferring IP addresses in any registry requires the company can demonstrate proper ownership of the IPv4 subnets.  The proper steps are required to be taken in cases of mergers, acquisitions, names changes and company closures

Working Through the Intricacies of ARIN’s Chain Of Custody

American Registry of Internet Numbers (ARIN) was created 1997 to govern and regulate the IPv4 addresses space allocated to clients in North America.  Much like a government run agency, ARINs role is to govern the IPv4 usage across the U.S and Canada.

If any organizations attempts to transfer or sell IPv4 addresses to a third party, ARIN’s responsibility is to ensure that the source organization has the rights to transfer or sell the IP addresses.  It is commonly referred to ARINs 8.2 Transfer Request.

In order to successfully sell ARIN IP address space, your organization will need to prove ownership of the IPs since their original allocation date as verified in ARINs Whois records.  There are several steps that need to be taken within ARINs portal throughout the process

If your organizations has gone through a name change, acquisition, merger or dissolution, then ARIN will require legal documentation to prove the chain of custody.  While this can be a complicated process, the team at Brander Group has expertise in every one of these areas.
